Nvidia just needed to take the pristine TU116 graphics processor in its GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and reformat it into a smaller package to make a lower-cost copy. The new GeForce GTX 1660 is unsurprisingly similar to the higher-end model in that it lacks the Turing architecture’s signature RT and Tensor cores. It instead targets on-die resources at accelerating today’s rasterized games.
In order to make GeForce GTX 1660, Nvidia doesn’t even cut much of TU116’s resource pool: a pair of streaming multiprocessors are removed, and 128 CUDA cores and eight texture units are lost. But the GPU is otherwise quite complete, and its biggest issue is its lack of GDDR6 memory. The 1660 Ti’s 288GB/s of bandwidth is reduced to just 192GB/s by substituting 8 Gb/s GDDR5 instead.
