Intel NUC 8 Review

Intel NUC 8 Review

The NUC itself is great fast, quite and so far has worked flawless. The memory and SSD install was simple & dowloading win 10 to a usb and installing was fine as well. If I have any complaints it is I was surprised there was not more documentation in the box it was pretty slim maybe I am just old school and expect an owners manual.

The 2nd is the free software code had expired, I emailed the company and they did give me a working code for some free software that was pretty disappointing as the NUC is touted as a VR computer I thought it would have more VR software. Neither of these was I upset enough to rate it less than 5 stars.

Pros and Cons of Intel NUC 8

Pros
  • Small compact size.
  • VESA mounted.
  • Quieter fan compared to nuc 7 with bigger blower fans Two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
  • 4.5 Ratings.
Cons
  • Little bit expensive
  • 100w version not really worth it. Overclocks yes but not a significant enough improvement to justify the price difference. It would make sense if this was on a desktop where aftermarket cooling options are available. But OC with a stock air cooler is a waste of money, you can’t change the cooling options without ripping it apart.
  • Half Vega GPU performance is midway between a GTX1050ti to a 1060ti. On par with say an RX 470.
  • At 1300 cad after taxes for just the barebones. Plus 250 for m2 nvme and 200 for 16GB ram. You’re looking at a fully-loaded desktop pricing-wise.

Conclusion

Awesome little machine packed with incredible power. It is running VR alright but you can feel it is maxing out its capacity. There is no room for more. Added 32Go Corsair DRAM and two SSD PCie Samsung 970. So overall a pretty expensive configuration. It is running pretty silently for me most of the time (except for VR).
