Asus Zenbook Duo 14 ux482 Review

Like most high-end performance laptops, the Asus ZenBook Duo 14 has a 14in Full HD touchscreen with a wide color gamut, dedicated graphics, and Thunderbolt 4 ports. This is the smallest entry in the ZenBook Duo lineup in terms of both size and performance. If you are on the hunt for something a bit larger and more powerful, consider the new Asus ZenBook Duo Pro 2021.

Asus Zenbook Duo 14 ux482 Review

Design

This laptop is a sight to behold, as the concentric circular metallic finish is instantly recognizable, the Celestial Blue tone is divine, and the styling is refreshingly restrained. The last year’s ZenBook Duo UX481 was chunky and heavy, as you might expect from a two-screen device, but Asus made some modest improvements to the thickness and weight.

The main screen’s angle is limited to around 145 degrees, but on a portable laptop, I would much rather have a 180-degree display. This ZenBook Duo is also neither as thin nor as compact as the majority of 14-inch laptops of this generation, such as Asus’ own mainstream ZenBook 14 UX425 series, which we’ll occasionally mention in this article. ScreenPad Plus will make or break the Asus ZenBook Duo 14 (UX482), a touch-responsive IPS panel that measures 12.65 inches across the diagonal and 3.25 inches deep, and has a resolution of 1,920 by 515 pixels (157.1ppi).

When the lid is opened, the ScreenPad Plus hinges up automatically to form a slight angle. When I last checked this configuration in the 15.6-inch ZenBook Pro Duo (UX581), the screen was flat. This small upgrade has a large impact on usability, making it much easier to see what the screen is displaying when you’re sitting at a desk or at a table.

Connectivity

On the right side, Asus has included a MicroSD card reader — a practical feature for filmmakers who may need to transfer stills or video from a digital camera. On the left side, a full-size HDMI port and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports are on hand.

On the right side, you’ll find a microSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone/mic jack, and a USB 3.1 Type-A port to charge the laptop. On the left side, an HDMI port and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports provide high-speed data transfer and connect to multiple 4K monitors.

 Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is very small and squishy, as it was compressed to make room for the touchpad to its right. Because of all this, my normal touch-typing speed was a bit slower. The touchpad has its own issues. It is much larger than it is wide, making it not a particularly helpful shape for controlling the cursor on a landscape screen.

Left-handers will find its position on the right side of the keyboard inconvenient. As there is no improvement over the previous model in this aspect, you could say this is a design compromise in order to fit the second display in place.

ScreenPad Plus

The smaller screen, officially called ScreenPad Plus, was flat on the body of the Duo 14’s predecessor so that you had to crane your neck to access it. Now, with its new hinge design, the screen can be angled up to seven degrees. It not only gives a better view angle but also improves airflow and creates a smaller gap between it and the main display.

ScreenPad Plus

Although it isn’t seamless, it is similar to using two external displays side by side because the frames on both screens are slim. The ScreenPad Plus tilts out of the way to make room for air circulation and cooling under it, but the ZenBook Duo 14 (UX482) still ran slightly hot even when idle.

Battery life

The battery life is generally excellent, although the second screen could diminish your time away from the power source. In our streaming video test, the Duo 14’s battery life was 9 hours, 6 minutes with both displays set to 50% brightness. It still managed 11 hours, 57 minutes with just the 14-inch high-efficiency display on.

There’s a 70 Wh battery in the ZenBook Duo 14 UX482, which is bigger than the one on a 14-inch notebook. Your mileage may vary depending on what type of activity you perform and whether or not you use the second screen, but overall, this notebook should last quite a while on a single charge.

Features of Asus Zenbook Duo 14 ux482

ScreenXpert 2.0

The ASUS ScreenPad Plus, which is powered by the new ScreenXpert 2 software, has been updated to improve cross-screen multitasking and creativity. Boost productivity with the built-in apps and revolutionize creative workflows with the exclusive new Control Panel app.

Performance

The ZenBook Duo 14 is not light in terms of performance, as it combines the powerful processors of the latest 11th generation Intel Core processors with plenty of fast rams. Added to that is Intel Iris Xe, and an ultrafast PCIe SSD is included to ensure fast boot times and fast app loading.

Seamless Display

ZenBook Duo 14 offers a superior viewing experience, featuring a four-sided, frameless NanoEdge display, 400 nits, and ultra-thin bezels that deliver an impressive 93% screen-to-body ratio. It is also PANTONE-validated for professional-grade color accuracy, and TUV Rheinland certified for low blue-light emissions.

Cooling

It’s equipped with our new Active Aerodynamic System Plus, which takes advantage of the ErgoLift hinge mechanism and tilting ScreenPad Plus to increase cooling airflow by 49%.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Premium build.
  • ScreenPad Plus Features.
  • Long battery life.
  • Strong performance.
  • Runs cool and quiet with daily use.
  • 4.2 Ratings on Amazon.
Cons
  • Limited portability,
  • Heavy for a 14-inch laptop.
  • Narrow ScreenPad angles.
  • Expensive.
  • Poor webcam quality.
  • Uncomfortable typing experience.

Conclusion

However, because of the added screen, there are some fundamental design issues with the ZenBook Duo 14 (UX482), which is a capable laptop. Its distinctive capabilities do require tradeoffs, and prospective buyers will have to decide whether those tradeoffs work for them. Because of the lack of a wrist rest, the keyboard is awkward to use, and the touchpad is too small for long-term work. But if you want to live a dual display life, you can find workarounds, such as buying a separate wrist rest and wireless mouse. Take it from me, you will not be disappointed.

Is it worth to Asus ZenBook 14 ux482?

The Asus ZenBook 14 UX431FA is a good laptop for people who want to do a little bit of everything. It features a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor and up to 9 hours of battery life for $799. The laptop features a comfortable keyboard as well as a pair of surprisingly powerful speakers.

They need laptops with good thermal management, so my suggestion would be to spend some extra cash and get the MacBook Pro, which has very good thermal management.

It’s very bright at around 300 nits, but not as bright as the Dell XPS 13 or HP Spectre, for example. It’s also probably bright enough for outdoor or strong light use.

Thunderbolt is faster than previous technologies such as FireWire 800 and 3Gbps, and its greatest advantage is better performance. However, convenience is also important, since Thunderbolt enables audio, data, power, and video to be connected to a single port.
